Who should take the test?

Patients suffering with;

  • bloating.

  • cramps, discomfort, or pain in the abdomen.

  • diarrhea.

  • loose, greasy, bad-smelling stools.

  • passing excess gas, or flatulence.

  • weight loss.

Elastase is a digestive enzyme formed in the pancreas and excreted into the small intestine. Its measurement provides information about the production of digestive enzymes in the pancreas.

Since the pancreatic elastase is excreted unchangedely with stool, it is diagnostically well suited for the assessment of the exocrine pancreatic function. Decreased elastase concentration in stool indicates exocrine disruption of the organ such as chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic insufficiency or cystic fibrosis.

The test analyzes the values of the following analytes:

  • Pancreatic elastase
